American Airlines has it all, from Birmingham to New York

First 757 With New Livery

A long weekend in New York really couldn’t be more exciting than flying out, direct from Birmingham International with American Airlines.
The whole experience set our long weekend visit to Manhattan off to a brilliant start, thanks to the warm and welcoming Alicia and her onboard flight attendant team. Nothing was too much trouble and they seem to love helping each of their customers feel truly at home.

Onboard the Boeing 757, not a minute had gone by until I was offered a glass of orange juice or champagne. The cabin crew then handed me some Bose noise cancelling headphones for the flight and the food menu which was printed on a gorgeous silk matt paper. Immediately the airlines attention to detail shines through.

The pilot then welcomed everyone onboard, and a safety video was played in the seat displays. I thought this was incredibly impressive of American Airlines. The usual safety demos can be a bit repetitive and boring to watch, but this video featured lots of different locations, staff, and it had a really nice range of diversity, from young and old to people of different levels, ethnicities etc. They really do seem like a strong ethical company.

Travelling business, I was impressed with the level of comfort the airline strive to provide each customer with. The clean linen blankets and pillows, coupled with a wonderful refresh gift bag complete with eye mask, toiletries and a wide selection of newspapers to choose from lifted the whole experience.

In flight, the entertainment system was excellent too. They provide films ranging from classics, to current releases and different genre box office hits from the last two years, to a wide range of games such as pacman, and retro golf which kept me entertained on the outward flight.

The meal was also exceptional; American Airlines have worked hard to get the very best chefs to help prepare their in-flight menu. Comprising a range of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes, they also boast a tantalising, carefully selected range of wines to complement each dish.

The flight went quickly, and after a wonderful meal, I enjoyed changing the settings on the seat which varied between a gentle recline, to a full horizontal sleep mode. I managed to get about 4 hours sleep too, which helped me adjust to the different time zone.

Shortly before landing, there was another snack like meal which helped refill my energy in time for the commute to Manhattan.

For those who like the adventure, once off the plane you can get the air train before connecting to a direct subway to Manhattan. Once you’ve purchased your metro ticket, you can just keep topping it up at the machines using cash or card, it couldn’t be easier.

The only thing I would mention that on your return journey, make sure you leave plenty of time, especially at the weekends. There is considerably more maintenance work on the train lines at the weekend in New York, and it paid off to get there a bit earlier so I could enjoy the lounge at JFK which comes with complimentary drinks such as beer or wine, healthy and delicious snacks such as fresh olives, nuts and fruit to name a few. There’s also free wifi and coffee to help you logon to your virtual office in a relaxed and peaceful setting.

Overall, I do rate American Airlines better than other well known operators who fly to New York from the UK. Also, the fact that they go direct from Birmingham is a real plus for those who don’t want the hassle of having to transfer to London first.

From JFK, did you know that customers can also connect onto American’s network of over 40 destinations across the U.S., Canada, Caribbean and Latin America, including near-hourly transcontinental services to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO).

Transcontinental flights are operated by industry leading Airbus A321T aircraft, offering fully lie-flat seating in First and Business Class. American has two dedicated Admirals Club lounges in JFK for Business Class customers and a Flagship Lounge for First Class Customers.
